 Highlanders, Highlassies Top Weatherford

The McLennan Highlassies defeated the Weatherford Lady Coyotes 77-64 tonight in Weatherford.

The first half was dominated by 3-point attempts with Weatherford draining five and MCC sinking four. The Lady Coyotes hit all five of those 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the game to build a six-point lead. But MCC rallied back to tie the game with just under five minutes remaining in the half. The Highlassies ended the half on a 12-5 run to take the 36-29 advantage at the break.

MCC increased the lead to nine early on in the second half but Weatherford came back, taking a one-point lead midway through the half. The Highlassies regained the lead on the next possession and led the rest of the way.

Ashley Olvera led MCC with 19 points and Nikkitti Scott added 12. Kanisha Clark and Katie Pavlik each scored 11.

In the nightcap, the McLennan Highlanders defeated the Weatherford Coyotes 79-68.

Weatherford built a seven-point lead with 12:18 to go in the first half but the Highlanders rallied back tying the game at 20 midway through the period. MCC ended the half on a 24-10 run to break the game open.

The Highlanders led by as many as 23 in the second half. The Coyotes pulled within nine late in the half but were unable to get any closer.

Nafis Richardson led MCC with 28 points. Steven Werner and Taylor Smith scored 16 and 13, respectively.

MCC returns to action on Saturday, hosting Grayson. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m.
